This workshop will consider teacher dispositions as they relate to repertoire selections, scope and sequences, and pedagogical strategies. A wide range of repertoire will be presented from the World Music Initiative including material from: Korea, the Levant region, Somalia, China, Tanzania, and more. Considerations will be shared regarding learning outcomes that relate to identity, diversity, justice, and action in music education.

Karen Howard is Professor of Music at the University of St. Thomas in the U.S. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary music, vocal pedagogy, ethnomusicological practices in music education, diverse choral practices, and research. Karen’s published research centers around matters of diversity and equity in education. She is the founder and editor of the World Music Initiative series through GIA Music. The series includes collaborations with culture bearers, and has set a new model of resource for educators meant to engender confidence in navigating diverse cultures and materials.
