Australian Kodály Certificate Primary Level 1 

12 Wednesday afternoons in Semester 1, beginning 12 February, 2025

8 Saturday mornings in Semester 1, beginning 8 February, 2025

*Please note: Level 1 and Level 2 are SEPARATE courses. You must complete level 1 before starting level two.

About This Course:

This course offers a unique approach to professional development, providing participants with the opportunity to enhance skills
and work actively with teaching concepts. A resource collection of age-appropriate cultural materials – songs and games – will be developed as part of the process.

This course is accredited by the KMEIA national body and upon passing, participants receive the appropriate credit towards the Australian Kodaly Certificate (AKC) in Music Education.

The courses are suited to primary and secondary school specialist class music teachers. It is expected that the applicants for the course will have (or be completing) a degree/diploma or equivalent in music education and/or education. Applicants should have basic musical knowledge and music literacy skills.

Students must attend all contact hours, submit work by the due date and pass assessments in order to gain credit for an AKC course

To secure your place in the course, fees must be paid in advance. Payment must be received in full by Friday Jan 24 2025.

$500 Deposit due on enrolment to secure your place. This will be taken off the total of your course fees.

Susan Searle – Level 1 Lecturer

Students must complete courses in order, eg students wishing to enroll in Level 2 must have completed Level 1.

Payment:
Please note that the course lecturer will not be handling course money or book money. Invoices and receipts are emailed from the office. There is a ‘no refund’ policy after the course commencement. Please note that books may not be given to participants until payment has been made. Please see course payment policy HERE.

Materials:
You will be given a course book at your first session.
Other materials you will need to bring are pen/pencil and notebook.
You will also need to put together a resource folder and this will be explained in more detail at your first session.

Time Commitment:
In addition to the weekly classes, you will need to put time aside to practise musicianship skills, revise concepts and complete written homework tasks. The time needed to do this will vary for each person. Most people find they need to spend an additional 2 – 3 hours a week on coursework.

Assessment and Attendance:
Passing the course is not automatic, but is based on successfully completing all the course requirements. These will be outlined in the first session and throughout the course. You will receive ongoing assessment and feedback from your lecturer throughout the course. In addition you will need to complete several formal pieces of assessment which includes an examination and written homework tasks. Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a certificate of completion.

Students must attend all contact hours and pass all assessment in order to gain credit for an AKC course. In the case of illness and extraordinary circumstances, students may apply for special consideration and extension at the discretion of the course provider.

If you are unable to attend a session due to illness, being a COVID Close Contact or other COVID related reason, the lecturer will make allowances for a streamed/recorded lecture for the missed session.

Awards and Accreditation:

Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will be accredited with the following subjects and awarded with a certificate from the Victorian Branch of KMEIA.

The Australian Kodály Certificate is made up of these areas of study: Methodology, Teaching Techniques, Cultural Materials, Musicianship, Conducting and Vocal Techniques and Extension Studies. The model to be used by the Victorian Branch in 2025 will consist of two sections:

(Semester 1): Pedagogy, Materials and Practicum in Primary Levels 1, 2 and Secondary Level 1, 2

(Semester 2): Musicianship, Conducting and Ensemble (Choral Elective)

Requirements for Completing the Australian Kodály Certificate:

Participants who successfully complete subjects within the KMEIA Victorian course will be eligible to gain credit towards this award.

Renée Heron – Level 2 Lecturer 

Renée is currently the Artistic Director of The Yarra Voices and choir director and voice teacher at Camberwell Girls Grammar School. Renee has also enjoyed stints working with the Australian Boys Choir, Caulfield Grammar School, Xavier College and Methodist Ladies College.

In 2016-17, Renee had the privilege of attending the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Kecskemét, Hungary, where she studied Kokas-pedagogy under Kata Körtvési & musicianship with Dr László Nemes.

She is a musicianship and methodology course lecturer for Kodály Australia and is past President of the Victorian Branch. She is a regular adjudicator and workshop presenter and also guest lectures at Monash University.

Renée holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Queensland and a Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne. She is completing an Honors in Orchestral and Choral Conducting at the Elder Conservatorium in Adelaide with Dr Luke Dollman and Carl Crossin OAM. Renee is a member of Melbourne based chamber choir, Polyphonic Voices and is artistic director of treble vocal ensemble, Alta Collective.
